Finnish VILLE VALO smokes an astonishing 21,900 cigarettes a year, to give his voice a gruff, husky "edge".
The eccentric HIM frontman smokes 60 cigarettes every day, and insists the dangerous habit is an essential tool for him.Valo says, "That's how many you need to smoke to give your voice an edge. A guitar player has an effects pedal that he uses to make his guitar sound like he wants. For me my effects pedal is a packet of Marlboro Red. "I went from sounding like a choirboy to sounding like MARK LANEGAN."

I used to smoke 40/day and just by quitting I have gained tens of years to my lifelength. (that is, if I dont get hit by a truck or any other accident).

My dad will probably die within the next 10 years because of his smoking. He's just little older than 60, which means that if I dont start to reproduce soon he will probably never get to know my kids. He has KOL (i dont know what its called in english, but translated directly from swedish its Cronic Obstructive Lungdisease), which has been caused only from his smoking. I dont want to go down that road too, so it wasnt even a question to quit. Ironically though, my dad still hasnt quit and neither has my mother. They're both on "less strong cigs" though, but that doesnt matter.

Respect! I tried to quit three times but apparently was too weak.

I find it unbelieveble people can actually smoke that much  but my gran use to smoke just as much and she lived till 79  some people just arent effected so badly by it, hopefully Ville is one of them because usually 60 a day will only lead to one place

EXACTLY!.... Idiot.

I've been smoking since I was 13 or so, butI ve never smoked a pack a day. Never ever. And recently (last 2 years or so), I've been smoking less and less... Last week I've decided to quit cause I thought: "Girl, you only smoke two cigarrettes a day, whatta hell are you doing? QUit! Quit now!" And so, as I smoked the last cigarrette oof the pack I never felt like smoking again....

Like Maria's parents, mine are still smoking too. A pack a day for the last, let me see.... 30 years?? Yes, it's bad for them, but I think they're too afraid to try....

up to him i guess...i used to have the occasional fag and a while ago i got worried because i bought a packet and smoked it in less than 2 hours and i wasn't even drinking, and thought that maybe that occasional fag was gradually getting me hooked...i know on the larger scale of things that it's nothing to be that proud of...but i don't even have that social cigarette anymore...prevention is the best cure as they always say.

i've also cut down on my drinking a lot because i've realised i might actually want to have a liver at 25, it got scary at one point when i was quite miserable...i started relying on the booze for a good time...and for someone who isn't even claimed legal for this stuff until 3 months down the line now...i know it wasn't good for me.

i haven't cut it out of my life completely and i know they'll be the occasion where i do end up getting hammered...but i'm not going to go crazy anymore and continuely drink throughout the week...

Jess xx

I think I only like shisha :D actually felt no smoke ..or didn't use it properly :p besides if it's flavoured then the air nicely smells like while burning incense sticks...no bad smelling dense smoke.

Ah well, don`t forget that Mr Valo, at least while giving a gig or an interview, doesn`t smoke the fag till its very end :guitar: ... At his age and being so proud of the amount he gets through...hmmm... I used to boast with smoking when I was certainly less than 18, and now, being twenty-five, sometimes I feel ashamed of this killing habit. And it`s really killing... To hear your lungs "whisper" the words you don`t want to hear at night when you try to sleep is scary... And scary is the need which makes you get out of the bed even if it`s only five in the morning... I apparently see that I`m really lucky to be just a nicotine addict...

That side has to be sponsored by Marlboro
I don’t see any other reason for writing such dumbest news about giving “not healthy” advice how to give your voice an edge

Ville is being adored by some even for such "not healthy" advice... It is still not worn out to mention the amount he gets through a day... Anyway, he could produce his own label of cigarettes and I am telling you, this would be a business article... :-)

Well , 100 000 cigarettes more and our “frog sounding” Ville will be unemployment

blah.. but why am I even bother myself to write this , its not my business after all :sorry:

I honestly think he sounded best in Greatest Love Songs....his voice has gone downhill a little, especially in Dark Light...it's sad, he had such a wonderful voice, IMO :(
