I've lost overview a while ago, but I've had the impression Venus Doom didn't do too bad - wrong? How could it happen that Sire lost interest, if I got you right? But anyway, whatever happens, it probably happens for a reason. As one door closes, another one opens.

I can appreciate your optimism. If it comes to pass, hopefully another door will open for Ville but not to the porn shop. I have concern about Sire dropping them because a major label like that is only interested in numbers of course, and if HIM isn't meeting expectations, especially in these economic times, hard decisions have to be made. Of course, HIM isn't expected to sell 5 million units of one album, but it's an increasingly expensive endeavor for a label to support a band, and I wonder how well HIM is meeting expectation from the higher ups. On the other hand, Sire has a lot of lesser selling artists than the major ones on Warner Brothers, so maybe HIM is doing fine in their eyes. Venus Doom sold less than 500,000 units in the U.S. which is a backslide from the success of Dark Light, and now Screamworks is a backslide as well. The new fiscal year has just begun, at least in the United States, and corporations take stock of their financial practices at this time. It remains to be seen as to what the future holds for HIM and Sire seeing as the band has not been able to reproduce the kinds of numbers of Dark Light. The band has set the bar for themselves and are now falling short of it. Asking a corporation to lower their expectations, especially in the United States, is like asking the sun not to come up.

maybe i am wrong, but i think it is all not about money...cause guys know that this festival brings pretty much money, cause pretty many people are ready to pay much money to get the Helldone tickets ....so, if they need just money, they would never cancel Helldone...

I don't really think it's one of those events that would bring in much money... yeah, there are a lot of people attending and there are sponsors for the event which means there's income BUT there are also costs on the production and these are not low! I don't know what are the exact costs that they've had but working in the music business on daily basis myself I dare to claim that Helldone is no gold-mine. I do believe it earns profit and all costs are covered but I don't think that it would earn so much profit that they definitely should do it, so it's not a big loss for them financially to cancel that event.

It could be down to what the bands are charging to play, it could be down to the economic climate and it may not be profitable for the venue if the bands are charging too much. Alos a lot of headliners may not want to play NY without a good pay check, hell most normal people wont work unless its double time. As for Sire and the record deal, its down to lack of real promotion that those albums didnt do as well as DL, the internet maybe good for dispersing music but its also killed alot of real promotional arenas such as the singles charts. Also tours arent that expensive as earlier posters in this thread make out, Wednesday 13 has paid for all his tours himself and has done OK out of them, record companies tend to charge alot more, Terrorvision played Bolton and charged the same price for tickets as if they were playing a venue like the Acadamy 1 in a city like Manchester.

I suppose you're right about tour costs. You make it as expensive as you want it to be. Tour buses alone like the ones HIM use cost around $700 per day for each bus, maybe that's peanuts to a label the size of Sire.

Maybe they've just run their course. Happens with 99% of the bands (unless youre the Rolling Stones lol).
I caught a glimpse of my reflection and didn’t recognise my face
I left an note at home explaining how I’m sorry that I left
I just needed to be alone for a while to realise that I’m a mess
I pray that things are better but I won’t hold my breath.

I’m holding out for a saving grace to show me the error of my ways
I really need a change
I’m not a pessimist but sometimes hope is missed or missing
I haven’t felt so fucking drained. I need a break

HIM has been around longer than most bands survive. I can't help but feel that this rather unusual quiet period has to do with the expiration of the contract with Sire Records. It's pretty coincidental that the band goes quiet, no Helldone, the alliance with Sire is uncertain, no tour plans. It's like when the kids are too quiet, it means something is wrong. Who knows. It's easy to fall into all kinds of speculations, and I'm definitely guilty of that. I'll just brace myself for whatever emerges from this.

I know, same here. A healthy sense of scepticism isn't a bad thing IMO, plus I dont buy this "well deserved break blah blah", doesn't fit here. Which doesn't mean it's not like the guys wanna have a calm Christmas- and New Years Eve time, I can imagine that as well. Also I think of this report in Villes house on New Years day and how he told the magacine about all these fanatics who stalk him during that time. I guess the weirdos get importet around Christmas time already, so probably it's not really a nice and calm time for them or especially Ville. So speaking about that, I think it's more than understandable that there wont be a Helldone this year. What leaves a bad taste is that there is no autumn tour so far, even though it was said so a couple of times. And that's what makes the speculations start even more, now that also Helldone wont happen.
