http://www.himclub.com/forums/index.php?app=blog&blogid=9&showentry=36

OK, here I go again!... It’s been a long time since I didn’t scratched the paper and write something in this blog of mine… It calls blog, and this means you can randomize your thoughts whatever you like, right? So here I am, randomizing again!
Had started a new year! (What a new!) Neither started nor good or bad, just started like any is other year by now in my long existence, and the feeling it will going to pass much fast and furious then the years before. So I’ve made a list with the things I will like to do and not to do this year, for being sure I’ll not miss something! Of course I made the list in my own hilarious-funny-crazy style; otherwise I would not recognize me into it!!!

Things to do:
•	Take the driving license! (come on, woman, face the fear and take that wheel in your hands, how hard can it be to stare on the road and claxon the idiots that don’t get away from the street?! You can do it! It’s just a lifeless object, not a hideous monster, you know!!!)
•	Go outside and socialize more! (This cannot be so hard! Yeah, I know, after 14 hours of work, you’d prefer to take a shower and a nap, but the bed is not going anywhere, is it? Well, it’s true next day you maybe will have some difficulty to recognize your face in the mirror, but what the hell? The feeling will be unreels, and plus the psychologists says “woman must change their look everyday to experience something new”… so who the fuck am I to say contraire?
•	Travel more! (Yeah, right! ... This might be a problem without accomplish the point one in this list! I mean, only the idea to be stocked for endless hours with all kind of peoples nice or not, smelly or not, annoying or not in a tiny-little sit on a car/train/plane/whatever, give me chills!)
•	Learn to make cookies! (This doesn’t mean I don’t know how to make it, the point is to make them comestible and to not have stomach hurts after eating! Remember, a great philosopher said “the appearance don’t reveal the essence” - translation “don’t trust them if it looks good, you may die if you try them!” Just work on this aspect, OK? It’s not worth to spend your life in prison for a damn cookie! )

Things not to do:
•	Stop yelling at your neighbor! (I know, I know, it’s very hard to wake in the middle of the night in the hundreds decibels of the last released opera masterpiece and said to him gently: “Look, neighbor, I really appreciate your musical taste and love, nobody in this world would understand you better because of my own love for the high sentiment that music bring to you, but can you put the fuck up an end to this?! Cause people have the bad habit to SLEEP at night!!!” Yeah, you should try this, instead of yelling: “I could put to you some music, too, asshole! And I bet you’re not going to like it at all, especially that part which says seek and destroy!!!)
•	Don’t try to change the world anymore! (Look, you’re not the first and surely not the last naïve that happened to think “what you give is what you get!” Come on, wake up and open your eyes, when you give you may get double in a wrong way, so stop doing this! Someone can be hurt, and the first one is you, get it? – Well, this is not a funny thought like the ones before, but hey! ... It’s sad but true!)
•	Don’t dream! (The hardest thing! For someone who lives more in the sky above then in the real neighborhood is so damn hard! “Dreamers can change the world” – this was my motto and my guidance in life, for escaping from the ugliness and bitterness of it, hiding and imagining things became so beautiful and pure like a thousands faces of a diamond; and so many ways to escape! A great book that lead you into that magic world, a beautiful poem that make you close your eyes and saw what was in the poet’s heart when he wrote it, a song that can carry you at the point when world’s ending, to the point where anything else is melting into feelings! Well… I’m sure I’m going to miss all these! Sorry for the serious end of this list! But cannot joke all the time and with all the things! So farewell dreaming world and welcome to real! Like my mom always said “better late then never”…

PS: I reserve the right to complete the list with anything else will come! After
all, I’ve made it and I have fully copyright!!!

Genesis - Goings On

http://www.himclub.com/forums/index.php?app=blog&blogid=2&showentry=29

Been a little while since I last posted anything, I've nothing to write really but I'd like to point out a few things that have been going on. I've been in full production mode.

Firstly, I've begun contributing to hehe2.net, a 'Linux Advocacy' blog run by Rami Taibah; as I've learned, it's actually quite a popular establishment in the blogosphere, and several of its articles have ended up being pointed to by numerous news sites like Digg.com. My first submitted article garnered over 900(!!) Diggs, and the second getting a little over 800. Working with this guy has been an absolute pleasure so far, and it's also giving my material a level of exposure that I've never experienced before. The whole experience has been fantastic, and hopefully it's to be the start of something even greater.

Apart from that, my online portfolio has also received a rather significant facelift, so here's how it's looking at the moment:

(Yeah, it shows Himclub.com dead-center on the main page... hope you don't mind, Klaus )

Genesis - Working With IE6

http://www.himclub.com/forums/index.php?app=blog&blogid=2&showentry=28

Back in 2003, if w3schools is to be believed, 71% of people on the internet were using Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, thus making it the standard at the time for web browsers. When you made a website, you made it with IE6 in mind, and that meant you made it without upholding web standards in mind.

The reason for this, is because Microsoft's Internet Explorer series of browsers had, by way of bundling them with Windows computers and deeply integrating them with the OS, effectively forced everyone to use it in some capacity; and face it, most casual computer users see the IE icon on their desktop and think of it as “THE INTERNET”. The concept of replaceable web browsers, at the time, was an alien one to a lot of people, and it still is that way today.

With IE6 holding more than 2/3 of browser market share, IE's developers were in a position to make the web conform to standards set by them, instead of making a browser that conformed to the standards set by the web.

In all of the languages that go into creating web pages, there are universal standards that are set, and all browser developers and web designers are encouraged to stick to them; this is to ensure a seamless and identical experience for anyone that accesses any web page, regardless of their browser or their operating system. IE6, though, decided to ignore these for a large amount and make their own rules. Thus, web designers had to make special exceptions and hacks just to get their pages to display in IE6. Basically, it was a colossal pain in the arse for everyone, because of Microsoft's ignorance of standards that made for pages that would only display properly for some people and not others.

This was all five years ago, and IE6's successor has arrived so this kind of problem should be something that a designer or end user shouldn't have to worry about.

Unfortunately, that's not so.

Internet Explorer 7 arrived in late 2006 and along with it's new GUI that made a half-arsed effort at blatantly copying the layout that Mozilla pioneered with Firefox, they also improved their browsers conformity to web standards from being a complete joke to merely very bad. For a web page developer, this alleviates some of the headache, but the fact of the matter is they still need to make hacks and exceptions just to make their pages work for the majority that still use the IE family of browsers – I can attest to this personally from experience. This is further compounded by the fact that in 2008, seven years after its release, 26% of the online market still uses IE6.

IE7 is already nearly two years old and its successor is almost around the corner, and it seems that Microsoft has done very little to promote it. There's no reminders popping up for IE6 users to remind them that the browser they're using is obsolete, Microsoft's other services rarely even mention that it exists. And of course, you still have those folks that think the little “E” icon on their desktop with the circle around it is “THE INTERNET”.

So, what can be done about this? Personally, I'm in favour of simply abandoning IE6 altogether, regardless of how many people like to use it. It's a poorly made, ancient relic of a browser and it just doesn't do the job anymore. People who use it need to get the message in their heads, it needs to be drilled in, plastered up and blinking in bright flashing neon, “Using IE6 to drive yourself through the internet is like driving down a highway in a car constructed of balsa wood and held together with dried spit, and you need to upgrade like yesterday”.

I'm sure this sounds like a rather anal kind of topic to be ranting about, but people who make websites will know what I'm about with this. Designing with IE6 in mind makes web designers want to strangle puppies.

So, for those few that read this, do your part and make sure, if you're using IE6, (Go to Help > About Internet Explorer to see if you are), do your part and upgrade it to the seventh version, or better yet, use a different browser altogether. Please, think of the puppies.

recycle bin - my first days living in Jyväskylä

http://www.himclub.com/forums/index.php?app=blog&blogid=8&showentry=27

My lovely holidays in Rome are over. It was a great fun and definitely a nice way to spend two weeks with my family after leaving them for who knows how long time.

Today is my third day here in Jyväskylä. This far things have been really good. Seriously, things were never that good while I was studying in Tartu. I have already met lots of people from different places: girls from China (mainly communicating with Kun who's also studying Music and Media Management), girls from Russia (can't really remember the girl's name who's studying the same as I am but there are like 8 Russian girls over here and most of them are giving their very best to make their Russian names sounding more like English ones), one guy from Turkey, one girl from Germany, one girl from Africa and so on. I'm gladly mainly communicating with Finns themselves because I met one Finnish guy Matti (he's just adorable and really cute ) when we both were searching for the auditorium and later on one other Finnish guy studying the same subject as I joined us and two girls out of who one shares our program as well. So I'm still sticking to the Northern people. Oh, and the girl I'm living with is from Spain. She seems to be really nice.

So the studies haven't really started. It's an orientation week going on and tomorrow we'll start with some Finnish lessons. I'm so hoping my basic Finnish skills will help me a little over there! But I definitely hope to learn some things more because my Finnish is still poor and in desperate need of improving. I'm probably looking forward to Thursday's events the most because then we'll go on cruise on Päijänne lake. And hopefully this cute guy will come as well! I especially hope it because there's one Pakistan guy who arrived yesterday and he so wants to ask for my help in everything but I don't really want to spend any time with him and I'm trying to avoid him as much as possible. I yet haven't decided what I don't like about him but I just don't really feel like communicating with him. Yep, I'm picky and bitchy and racist too even though I get perfectly along with the African girl.

Well, I guess now that I have internet connection I'll try to stay more in contact with everyone. I started to miss all my friends (and also HIMclubbers) with these few days and now some time ago my father called me and that made me really sad. I was just writing an e-mail for my mom and I didn't feel myself sad or something like that but when I picked up the phone it really was sad and I realized how much I actually miss my home ones.

I actually wanted to stop writing right now but I can't stop with so sad thought. Oh, as for happier side I'm hopefully going to see Lapko this Friday which should be cool and in few weeks Negative will play in town so I'm hopefully going to see them as well. So all the concert stuff is still going to steal a lot of my time.

And as for happy news: Gerd Kanter won gold! =D =D He so had deserved it!!! *goes to pick an Estonian candy to celebrate*

Genesis - Web Design Companies

http://www.himclub.com/forums/index.php?app=blog&blogid=2&showentry=25

So, I'm going to try my hand at starting an independent web and graphic design company. This is something that's been in the works for quite a long time, but it's always stayed on the backburner for a couple of reasons, partly because I was preparing to move overseas from Australia (which happened 3 months ago), and more so because I really had no idea of how to go about it.

I was a Multimedia student at TAFE for a year before I dropped out in favour of my overseas jaunt, and while that one year really didn't teach me anything I didn't already know in terms of skills, it actually gave me the tiniest bit of insight to the industry needed to give me a lead on where to go.

Thus far, I've got three basic goals in this endeavor, two of which I'm working on very slowly. Firstly, a company of course needs a name and an identity. For now, I'm just using my name but I intend to change that (I don't want to look like I'm up myself). Secondly, a portfolio is needed to show off what I'm capable of. Ironically enough, before I started trying to assemble said portfolio I realised I really wasn't capable of a whole lot, and in fact since I started trying to create pieces to include in it, I've been learning as I go.

This actually shows quite a lot in the folio itself; the first four (!) major revisions thus far were absolutely terrible in comparison to the one being built now, which itself I'll probably end up tearing down and starting again.

To illustrate:

This is one of the later versions, which I was happy with from a layout viewpoint (following the 'Holy Grail' of web layouts), but when I showed it to a friend he was quick to point out that he's not into 'websites for goths'. Lesson learned: Don't forget you have a target audience, and you are not it.

Since then the entire thing has been given a more 'light' makeover, and another mistake I made that I'll be remedying is that my layout was table based, and no CSS was used at all: For casual internet people that probably means nothing, but it's extremely bad practice and it does affect everyone; layouts that are table-based and devoid of CSS are high in bloat and content that has to be repeated, which means a more sluggish and unpleasant experience for both designer and user.

It's only recently that I've learned to use CSS in an effort to keep the page's content and the page's presentation as seperate from each other as possible, which is really something that any designer should keep in mind.

My third goal is, once the folio is finished, simple advertising. I've no idea really how established web authors go about getting their names known, but I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Hopefully this post has been somewhat insightful. :|
